I'm a Runner: Bear Grylls
Occupation: Host of Man vs. Wild
Age: 36
Residence: Abersoch, U.K.
How did you get started running?
In the military. In the British Special Air Service, combat fitness is all about running. We would go until we ended up vomiting on the side of the road. Once I left the military, I gave up running for a while. It took me a while to realize it doesn't have to be like that. Running can be a great therapeutic way of training. These days I push myself hard, but I also slow down and take it easy sometimes. It doesn't have to be full-on hard all the time.
When did you get back into running?
After the military, I spent a year being really unhealthy, not exercising. I got back into running when I was offered my first commercial [for Degree deodorant]. I thought, If I'm going to have to take my shirt off, I'd better start doing sit-ups and start running.
Later, I got my first TV series [Escape to the Legion], which was about basic training for the French Foreign Legion out in the desert of North Africa. During that time, running was a part of everyday life. We were running two or three times a day. We always had to wear these terrible thin-soled pumps [sneakers]. We had horrific blisters. I just remember these blood-soaked white pumps [sneakers].

Man vs. Wild video game

It looks like Bear Grylls is taking a page from the "Brandon Hansen training program".
Actually, he's playing the new Man vs Wild video game.
Brandon on the other hand wasn't seen or heard from for a week after Starcraft 2 came out.
New Season Man vs. Wild
I love the whole world Discovery Channel
But for now, in honor of 25 years of the Discovery Channel, here are the coolest commercials ever:
Man vs Wild video game E3

Earlier this year I told you about the Man vs. Wild video game.
The release is getting closer. According to Bear's Twitter:
Bear Grylls: Off to LA now for launch of man vs wild playstation and wii then to Death valley, Nevada for HALO skydive into desert show.
It appears that Bear will be gracing E3 with his presence. E3 is of course the Electronic Entertainment Expo that is held every year to introduce the latest in electronic awesomeness.
Here's what the official press release said:
The game offers five authentic situations in a role play-style adventure, featuring seasoned survival expert Bear Grylls.
The action begins when players are dropped into extreme conditions and forced to demonstrate indigenous survival techniques such as escaping quicksand in the desert, exploring dangerous jungles, traversing ravines in the mountains and navigating some of the world's most treacherous waters.
The core gameplay of Man vs. Wild is a dynamic mix of exhilarating action adventure, role playing and puzzle solving tasks throughout five extraordinary expeditions. Players gather materials to accomplish tasks such as building fires, catching food, and creating the necessary tools for survival while traveling across miles of diverse landscapes.
Key features of Man vs. Wild game:
- Role Playing Adventure: Players will explore and survive wilderness destinations and discover hundreds of items while maintaining the health and well-being of Bear Grylls;
- Strategically Positioned Survival Challenges: Depending on location and skill level, players will be tested with hundreds of "Survival Challenges" ranging from the simple (building a fire) to the wildly insane (dodging a Grizzly bear);
- Wild Weather: Players will experience a wide range of weather conditions including snow storms, intense rain, sand storms and more while traveling through five challenging landscapes around the globe;
- Survival: Refuge, food and water are the constant priority for all players. Players must hunt and collect food, even if it means eating deer eyeballs, and water to keep Bear nourished and healthy for the challenges that lie ahead. When night closes in, the player must create a sturdy lean-to to protect Bear from potential animal attacks and the harsh elements.
The game is scheduled for a Fall release. And I can't wait!!!! Definitely buying that one.
Man vs Wild: The video game

I saw this yesterday when Bear Grylls updated his Twitter page with this:
BearGrylls: Doing 1000 lines of voice over today for the man vs wild wii and playstation game. i always get quite tongue tied at these things!
Once I saw this I knew I had to do some research.
Apparently, Discovery Communications has partnered with the video game publisher Crave to turn not only Man vs. Wild into a video game, but also Deadliest Catch. Both of these shows are two of the Discovery Channels highest rated.
In the Man vs. Wild game, players will be able to control a character under the guidance of host and survival expert Bear Grylls. They will use survival skills in a number of different landscapes, situations and climates.
In the Deadliest Catch game, players will be the captain of a crab boat and will have to navigate the Bering Sea. They will try to collect fishing pots to make a profit.
Deadliest Catch will launch this spring and Man vs. Wild will be out by the end of 2011.
Since I happen to have a Wii and am a Bear Grylls fan, I will have to get this game. If nothing else so I can give Mario Kart a rest.
Life on Discovery
Bear Grylls to host new Discovery show
Some of the stuff that he does is just incredible. Plus, he's just such a fun host to watch.
Well Bear finally updated his blog and while Man vs. Wild is experiencing their highest rated season ever, it looks like Bear will be taking on another project as well.
According to his blog:
He also goes on to say that if you happen to see him in LA stop and say hello. I'd love to just be walking down the street and bump into Bear. I'd ask him to make a fire. Oh, and give him a high-five.
And if you think that the things Bear does are impressive, wait until next week's episode of Man vs. Wild where we get to see the behind-the-scenes of the show. This means the cameramen that do the same things Bear does (only with a camera in hand).
Man vs. Wild: Urban Survivor Trailer
I heard about this episode on his blog last year and couldn't wait for it to air. It looks sweet.

It's possibly the coolest ad campaign I've seen in a long time.

Everest: Beyond the Limit
In April I wrote a post about Washingtonians that were going to attempt to summit Mount Everest and that the Discovery Channel would be documenting their climb.
International Mountain Guides, based out of Ashford, Washington will be the focus of the 5 episode series called Everest: Beyond the Limit. This will be the third season of the show for Discovery.
The series will run from December 27 to December 30. Here's the complete schedule on the Discovery Channel. But it all starts on the 27th with these showtimes:
- Dec. 27, 8:00 PM - Episode 1: First Summit
- Dec. 27, 9:00 PM -Episode 2: Impossible Dream
- Dec. 27, 10:00 PM - Episode 3: Deadly Countdown
Since 1991, International Mountain Guides has led 209 climbers up Mount Everest.
Man vs. Wild returns tomorrow on the Discovery Channel
It's finally that time. Time for new episodes of Man vs. Wild. You know the show, where Bear Grylls runs around in the wild and shows the viewers how to survive in areas that they will probably never visit.
But if the they did visit there, they would know how to survive.
Bear is amazing. Period.
Catch the new episodes starting tomorrow, August 19, at 9:00 PM on the Discovery Channel. Bear will be taking on the Alabama wild.
The Discovery Channel currently has a posting for Bear's Top 10 memories from the Alabama episode.
Here's that list:
10. The view across the Carpathians from the top of the grove (whilst hanging from the heli skids)
9. Finding that tree down the cliff face.
8. Grabbing the tree trunk while my raft went over the waterfall.
7. Getting wedged down that cave shaft (not!).
6. Not getting bitten by that wild pig!
5. Eating flamed pork by firelight in my camp.
4. Surviving the flames of the forest fire.
3. Grabbing the back of a logging truck at high speed (just!).
2. Getting pulled over by the state troopers looking like Swamp Man.
1. Finishing with my shoulder intact only three months after breaking it. I was very nervous on this one, but all came out well. Thank the Lord.
That is quite a list. And it sounds like an amazing episode! I can't wait.
This episode will be followed by another one at 10:00 PM in which Bear heads to Belize.
Man vs. Wild: Wild wins this round
A true wilderness badass, Bear Grylls was injured on Friday while in Antartica.
The British adventurer fell and injured his shoulder while taking part in an expedition for Ethanol Ventures to promote the potential of alternative energies like bioethanol, Discovery said in a statement.
Grylls on Sunday was headed to the U.K. to get medical attention. The severity of the injury wasn't immediately released.
"Bear has a strong religious faith and a loving family to help speed his recovery," Discovery said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Bear as he makes the long trip back to the U.K."
Global Angels, an international charity that champions the needs of children. Grylls has supported the charity for the past few years.
Well, Wild may have won this round. But we'll have to see about the next. Oh, and Bear still has the coolest name, and wears the coolest pants on his adventures.
